Hi there,
I returned to reporting on social movements in the field this week after a hiatus prompted by psychological injuries I endured covering the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. (Details in the archives.) I loved being back in the mix. Above is an audio version of the column I wrote about the People’s March for peace and justice in Washington, DC, which took place ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration. In it, I discuss how to balance hope with doom.
People tell me that listening to my reporting and analysis helps them digest it in a different, deeper way. Science backs this up.
Audio improves accessibility and enhances learning by creating an emotional connection through tone, intonation and rhythm. These can help engage the listener, improve focus and solidify memory retention.
I make this version available to paid subscribers only. Journalism, analysis, writing and recording are all skills that, done well, help people better understand the world and, perhaps, their place in it. This service can take a real toll on the health and, sometimes, safety of the people providing it.
I am truly grateful for the paying subscribers who understand the costs that journalists like me bear to bring the benefit of information and insight to you.
Thank you,
Kate
