I made a mistake in the process of reporting my last piece. I’m sharing this with you so that I hold myself to the same standards of transparency and integrity that I expect from other members of the press. The column, “Bezos, The Post and a totalitarian drift,” delves into Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos’s decision to scrap the editorial board’s tradition of endorsing a presidential candidate. In it, I reported that Deputy Opinion Editor Charles Lane was upset by the Oct. 25 revelation, lamenting what was essentially an ambush 11 days before the election. The board was ready to back Vice President Kamala Harris. I also noted that Lane told writers they should not talk to the press about it.
